SizweNtsalubaGobodo (SNG) is the fifth largest accounting firm in southern Africa. Headquartered in Woodmead, South Africa, SNG delivers auditing, advisory and forensic services to public and private organisations, SMEs and non-profits across a range of sectors including education, healthcare, financial services, and retail and wholesale.

SNG’s mission is “To provide innovative, effective and efficient assurance and advisory services that exceed client expectations while remaining focused on developing and retaining talent, and supporting local communities.”

Like many industry leaders, SNG relies on AMD technical innovation.

Challenge

SNG employs more than a thousand staff members across twelve office locations in all nine of South Africa’s provinces. The firm’s workforce is 90 percent mobile. SNG accountants spend most of their time at client sites and work only intermittently at regional corporate offices.

SNG handles highly sensitive client data, so the organisation required technology that would be as secure as possible in the event of equipment loss or theft. As an accounting firm, SNG always has a keen eye on the bottom line and was seeking cost effective technological solutions without the drawbacks of low cost equipment.

Accordingly, portability, security, energy efficiency, reliability and affordability were special concerns for SNG. The organisation required reliable, secure, light-weight, cost and energy-efficient technology suitable for the productivity needs of a highly mobile workforce.

Solution

Late in 2015 SNG received a half-dozen HP 745 EliteBook and 655 ProBook notebooks with AMD PRO processors. The firm conducted extensive business-unit testing over the next two months.

“We had an overwhelmingly positive feedback from the AMD product. We’ve not had any issues with the performance or reliability, and I’ve never had such a successful rollout in my career. It’s been smooth sailing,” says Kelvin Mjema, SNG’s IT Manager and Chief Technology Officer.

Pleased with performance, security features and how the products fit into day-to-day operations, SNG ordered a few extra units and the relationship with AMD grew over time. SNG subsequently rolled out approximately 700 HP EliteBooks, Probooks and workstations supported by AMD processors, and plans to standardise its entire workforce to AMD products.

Benefits

SNG has gained security and product life, enhanced collaboration, extended equipment lifecycle, and saved significant capital expense since implementing AMD technologies.

“We can’t take any chances with sensitive client data, said Mjema. “Our technology must be as secure as possible in the event the computer is no longer in the hands of our employees.”

He added, “The EliteBook 745 comes with a range of security features that are essential to our rollout, like the integrated fingerprint reader. SSB is another layer of security. The hard drive locks and renders the machine completely unusable in the event of loss or theft. And we can remotely track where it was last used. We can ensure that our client’s data is always secure and private and only the right people have access to it.”

Another advantage of the fingerprint sensor is that employees don’t have to type in a password to power up the computer. SNG’s accountants, who often must run four or five applications at once, can hibernate their machines, move to the next client location, swipe a finger to log in, and immediately resume working.

The firm also found the notebooks to have long battery life. “You practically don’t have to plug in your charger for nearly a full day,” Mjema said. “You don’t have to look for a power point in the client’s boardroom. We deal in the business of time—things like that make a huge difference in productivity.”

SNG is also pleased with equipment life since switching to AMD, and plans to extend the standard warranty and run products for four years instead of three.

Additionally, the EliteBook 745 supports superior voice and video conferencing with Bang & Olufsen audio equipment and noise reduction software. Subsequent to transitioning to AMD, Mjema reports a spike in the use of collaboration tools, compared to previous products.

“By the end of 2017 the project will have been fully completed and SNG will be fully-supported by AMD technology. With $100-plus savings per AMD-powered Elitebook, we earned ridiculous cost savings for the business. In total rollout we are looking at R2M per year in savings.”
